Five ‘fantastic’ houseplants to ‘keep mould at bay’ in your bathroom all year long

High humidity levels in the bathroom can lead to the growth of potentially dangerous mould types, such as black mould.

Preventing mould is much easier than banishing the problem, and introducing houseplants is a great way to do so.

According to James Chapman, owner of Bella Bathrooms, there are certain indoor plants which will “thrive” in the bathroom and “keep mould at bay”.

1. Spider plants

The expert said: “Spider plants are fantastic for bathrooms. They help maintain optimal humidity levels, making them perfect for preventing mould.”

In order to care for this houseplant, place them in indirect sunlight and water them moderately, keeping the soil slightly moist.

2. Ferns

Jame explained: “Ferns efficiently absorb moisture from the air, helping to reduce dampness and mould growth.

“This is essential for preventing mould in a bathroom. Keep them in indirect light and ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged for best results.”

3. Peace lilies

Peace lilies are popular houseplants and are great for bathrooms as they will tolerate low light.

They are excellent at purifying the air all over the home and absorbing mould spores, as well as dealing well with humidity changes.

The expert noted: “To care for peace lilies, water them regularly but avoid overwatering, and place them in a shaded spot.”

4. Air plants

Air plants do not need to be in soil and thrive in temperatures between 10 to 31 degrees Celsius and humidity levels of around 40 to 60 percent.

Mist them with water several times a week and ensure good air circulation to keep them healthy.

5. Aloe vera

Known for its beauty benefits, aloe vera is also great at mitigating mould growth in the bathroom.

It thrives best in high humidity, making the bathroom an excellent choice to place the aloe vera.

James said: “Keep it in bright indirect sunlight and water it deeply but infrequently to ensure it stays healthy.

“Adding these plants to your bathroom can significantly help in controlling humidity and preventing mould growth, while also enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the space.

“It’s a simple and effective way to ensure your bathroom remains a safe and pleasant space.”
